The UK authorities has included eleven new destinations to its official alert roster regarding the threats of industrial alcohol contamination from contaminated beverages.

The updated travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "an international surge in the frequency of documented incidents" of methanol toxicity.

Just last month, officials had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current list, following several notable events like the tragic loss of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being cautions that even tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can lead to vision loss or death within 12 to 48 hours.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Methanol is a poisonous substance often employed in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not intended for drinking.

Although it is generated during the creation of beverages, reputable manufacturers lower it to low, safe levels for drinking through the refining procedure.

Yet in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to reduce expenses, and as it is flavorless and odourless, it is very difficult to notice.

Government Advice for Travelers

Government minister a senior official said that each tourist should recognize the symptoms of industrial alcohol contamination.

"While consuming alcohol abroad, choose trusted places and steer clear of local brews or complimentary drinks," Falconer warned.

"If something seems unusual, for example a headache that's way worse than typical or sight issues – seek medical attention right away."

The full list of destinations identified as posing a risk of toxic alcohol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
