UN Lifts Penalties on President of Syria Ahead of Presidential Visit
United Nations Security Council members gave the green light to a US resolution ending penalties on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his presidential meeting next week.
Sharaa was named interim leader subsequent to commanding a revolutionary movement that ousted the former president in winter 2024, bringing to a close thirteen long years of internal conflict.
Washington's ambassador UN ambassador Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "a powerful diplomatic message" that acknowledged Syria entered "a fresh chapter" after Assad's removal.
He had been subject to global penalties in his role as head of the religious organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), previously associated with the terrorist network. Washington eliminated HTS from a list of international terrorist organizations this past July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.
Syria's foreign minister expressed satisfaction with the elimination of the sanctions, stating online: "The nation shows its gratitude to Washington and allied countries for assisting the Syrian nation and citizens."
Upcoming White House Meeting
President Sharaa's presidential meeting at the start of the week occurs subsequent to American leader Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president achieved "significant advancement" working toward stability to the war-torn country.
The pair met initially in May, during Trump's Riyadh trip while traveling through Arab nations.
Subsequent to that discussion, Trump portrayed Sharaa as a "tough guy" possessing a "powerful background".
His former militant faction was al-Qaeda's affiliate within Syria prior to breaking relations back in 2016.
Earlier American Trip
The upcoming meeting does not represent Sharaa's first trip to the US during this period. This past fall, he emerged as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to address the United Nations gathering at UN headquarters after approximately sixty years.
Throughout his presentation, he stated the country had been "restoring its proper position among the nations of the world" while showing support toward Gaza's residents.
