Daria Kasatkina Declares Temporary Pause Due to ‘Emotional Strain’

Australia's top-ranked WTA competitor has decided to step away for the remainder of the current year, admitting she is at her “emotional and mental threshold.”

Factors Leading to the Choice

The Australian No. 1, who this year altered her allegiance to compete for Australia, credited the transition for contributing to considerable “mental and emotional pressure.”

Additional factors included the continued challenge of being separated from her relatives and the relentless circuit routine.

“I've been far from fine for a extended duration and, honestly speaking, my on-court achievements show it,” she shared on her online accounts.

She added, “Truth is, I've encountered a barrier and am unable to proceed. I need a break. A rest from the monotonous daily grind of professional tennis, the constant packing, the results, the expectations, the familiar opponents (sorry, girls), each element involved in this life.”

Private Difficulties and Return Plans

“I can only handle I can endure and take as an individual woman, all whilst competing with the leading players in the world.”

“Should this be seen as weakness, then I accept it, it's true. That said, I know I am strong and will get stronger by stepping back, resting, recalibrating and renewing. Now is the moment I heeded my own needs for a difference, my thoughts, my feelings and my physical self.”

The athlete chose to switch nationality after departing Russia due to apprehensions about her well-being, having openly opposed the government's policies affecting the queer community and the conflict in Ukraine. Originally based in the Middle East, she moved to Australia and became a permanent resident in the spring.

She then announced her engagement to longtime girlfriend an ex-Olympic athlete, who secured a second-place finish for her former team at the last Winter Olympics after earlier competing for her birth nation Estonia.

The tennis star further mentioned she has been separated from her parent, who remains in Russia, for several years.

Career Context

A Roland Garros final four competitor in recent years, the player had finished the recent years ranked in the top ten but is presently outside the top 15 after a modest season where she had a near-even record.

She is likely to exit the leading positions by the time the next Grand Slam begins.

The professional athlete confirmed she aims to resume in 2026, “refreshed and prepared,” with the preparation for her local Grand Slam probably acting as a comeback goal.

Broader Implications

Australia's current No. 2 is a rising star, ranked 35th globally.

Kasatkina is the latest elite athlete to cut short their year, following other prominent players, amid a notable increase of athletes withdrawing during competitions.

The tour governing body obligates elite athletes to appear at a required schedule, featuring the major tournaments, 10 WTA 1,000 events, and lower-tier matches.

But world No. 2 the Polish star stated recently, “There's no way to squeeze it in the schedule. Maybe I will have to pick some events and miss them, even though they are required.

“It's essential to plan wisely about it - not really unfortunately care about the regulations and just focus on what's healthy for us.”
