Oklahoma City Thunder Kick Off Title Defense with Nail-Biting Overtime Win

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in action

The Thunder star came to the Thunder in 2019.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the winning baskets deep into double overtime as the Oklahoma City Thunder started their NBA title defense with a 125-124 victory over the Houston Rockets.

The reigning MVP scored a team-high 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds remaining in the second overtime, giving the titleholders a winning beginning.

The Rockets' big man led all scorers with a game-high 39 and also hit a career-high five three-pointers.

But the Thunder's rookie, who contributed 28 points of his own, played a major role alongside match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.

"Determination and defence," SGA said of their performance. "We know that when we do it on defence we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—makes, misses, fortune or bad luck. We did sufficient defensive work to secure the victory. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."

Prior to the tip-off, the team's title banner was unveiled at their home court, while the squad were presented with their title rings.

The Thunder beat the Pacers in the previous season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their maiden championship since the team relocated in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had won the 1979 crown.

The Pacers will have the opportunity to get some early revenge on this Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Rockets are back on court on the identical day at the Detroit Pistons.

Elsewhere, a huge effort of 43 points, 12 boards and nine assists from the Slovenian star was insufficient to stop his new team the Lakers from falling to a 119-109 loss against the Golden State Warriors.

Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Stephen Curry chipped in 23 points for the road team.

The Lakers were without the NBA's all-time leading scorer James as he recovers from a back issue.
